How to Start a Nutrition Blog

So you’ve got your website all set up and you’re ready to start blogging….that’s great! Trust me when I say that blogging is not dead

If you’re a nutritionist passionate about helping people on their health journeys, then starting a nutrition blog is a great way to reach more people and establish yourself as an authority in your field, and I’m going to show you how in this post!

Let’s walk through everything you need to know to start a successful nutrition blog.

Do You Need a Nutrition Blog?

I know you’re probably hesitant to start a nutrition blog and might be thinking:

  • “I don’t have enough time between seeing clients and marketing my business”

  • “I don’t like writing”

  • “Isn’t blogging dead? Who’s going to read my blog posts anyways?”

I hear these all the time from my l clients, and I get it!

In all honesty, no, you don’t need a nutrition blog and you can run your nutrition business without one. But I’m still going to suggest that you start one!

Here’s why I recommend starting a nutrition blog:

  • Building Authority: Sharing your expertise through blog posts on your website allows you to showcase your knowledge and build trust with your ideal clients.

  • More Traffic to Your Website: A search engine optimized (SEO) blog post allows you to be found on Google more easily and reach a wider audience, bringing people to your website from all over the world.

  • Free Education: Having a blog allows you to offer free education to your audience and provide them with quick wins before they even start working with you.

  • Networking and Collaboration: Blogging can open doors to future collaborations with colleagues and brands to help expand your network.

Blogging isn’t just about typing some words out and hoping someone will read them.

A well-crafted, intentional blog post is a passive way to help bring your ideal clients straight to you, from Google, for years to come!

How Often Should You Be Nutrition Blogging?

Consistency is key when it comes to blogging, but that doesn’t mean you need to pump out weekly blog posts to reap the rewards!

When you’re first starting out, it’s best to figure out a sustainable posting schedule that works for you, and stay consistent with it.

Maybe for you, that means publishing a blog post every month or every other month. Whichever schedule you decide on, make sure you hold yourself accountable and get those blog posts out there!

When deciding on a blog posting schedule that works for you, remember to keep these factors in mind:

  • Current workload (clients, marketing, administration for your business)

  • Time required to research for the blog post

  • Time required to find the right keywords and do some SEO research

  • Time required to write a good-quality blog post

Blogging is a long-term game, so don’t be disappointed if you don’t see success right away.

If you keep up with your schedule and keep posting, you’re bound to start seeing an increase in traffic to your website over time!

Best Platforms to Use For Your Nutrition Blog

Back when blogging first became popular, there were a lot of limitations in terms of blogging platforms to use and there were only a few to choose from.

In 2024, blogging has become so easy! It’s likely that your website platform also has a blogging component, so be sure to check first before creating your blog on a separate platform.

Here are a few blogging platforms to consider:

  • Wordpress: WordPress offers a flexible and customizable platform that works well for both beginners and experienced bloggers.

  • Blogger: Blogger is a user-friendly platform that's perfect for beginners. It's free to use and offers built-in analytics to track your blog's performance.

  • Squarespace: Squarespace is known for its beautiful and intuitive design templates.

Squarespace also offers an all-in-one solution for hosting, domain registration, and website building, which makes it my top choice for blogging!

When choosing a platform for your nutrition blog, I highly recommend picking something that can be easily found on your website and vice versa (as you want people to be directed to your programs and services directly from your blog posts).

Nutrition Blog Post Ideas

Coming up with fresh and engaging blog post topics that your audience wants to read about is essential for keeping your readers interested and wanting to know more!

Take some time to sit down and write out topics related to your niche that people need and want to know about.

You can also look back at any social media posts that have done well for you and repurpose that content into a blog post (hint: this works for email newsletters too!).

Here are some nutrition blog post ideas:

  • Healthy Recipes: Share nutritious and delicious recipes that your readers can easily recreate at home. Include step-by-step instructions, photos, and nutritional information for each recipe.

  • Myth-Busting: Address common myths and misconceptions about your niche and provide evidence-based information to debunk them.

  • Product Reviews: Review health foods, supplements, kitchen gadgets, and other products related to your niche.

  • Seasonal Eating Guides: Create seasonal eating guides that highlight the benefits of consuming fresh, seasonal produce and provide tips for incorporating them into meals.

  • Q & A Sessions: Answer common questions from your readers about nutrition and other related topics in a dedicated Q & A blog post.

  • Client Case Studies: Write about the journey one of your clients had with you, including where they started, how you helped them, and their transformation.

  • “How To” Blog Posts: Describe simple things your ideal audience can do to get a quick win.

  • Roundup Blog Posts: Roundup your favourite foods, products, supplements, etc. and explain why your ideal client needs them. Bonus points if you link these products back to an Amazon Affiliate account to make commission on every sale!

Experiment with different types of content to keep your blog fresh and engaging and pay attention to your audience's feedback and analytics to determine which types of posts resonate most with them!

Health and Nutrition Bloggers & Holistic Nutrition Bloggers to Follow

If you’re new to blogging or have no idea where to start, it can be helpful to follow other health and nutrition bloggers and/or holistic nutrition bloggers for inspiration and to get an idea of how to write and structure your blog posts.

Here are a few blogs that I recommend taking a look at before you get started:

Remember that it’s important not to copy other bloggers, but to simply use their blog posts for inspiration and to help plan out and design your posts.

How to Get Your Nutrition Blog to Rank First on Google

You know how when you search for something on Google and the exact thing you’re looking for is the first option that comes up in your search? That’s what it means to rank first on Google! And that’s exactly what blogging can help you do.

Ranking first on Google will help drive traffic to your website and get more eyes on your services, programs, and products!

But how do you rank first on Google? By making sure your website and blog posts are search engine optimized (SEO)!

Here are some strategies to help you improve your nutrition blog’s SEO and improve your chances of ranking first on Google:

  • Keyword Research: Use UberSuggest to identify relevant keywords or phrases that are related to your niche that your ideal clients are searching for on Google.

  • Optimize Your Blog Posts: Incorporate keywords and phrases into your blog posts by using them in the title, headings, meta descriptions, and throughout the body of the blog post.

  • Create High Quality Content: Focus on creating engaging content that provides value to your ideal client and addresses pain points they might be experiencing. Long form blog posts of at least 1,500 words tend to perform better in search results.

  • Optimize Your Images: Use descriptive file names and alt tags for your images to help search engines understand the content of your visuals.

  • Mobile Optimization: Make sure that your blog is mobile-friendly! Google prioritizes mobile-responsive websites in search results.

  • Internal Linking: Link to other relevant blog posts or pages within your website to encourage readers to explore more of your content or book a call with you.

  • Build Backlinks: Pitch to be featured on reputable websites and blogs within your niche to earn backlinks to your site. This helps demonstrate authority and credibility to search engines!

Starting a nutrition blog is a great way to reach more people, establish yourself as an authority in your field, and drive more traffic to your website and offers.

By defining your goals, using other bloggers as inspiration, creating valuable content, and optimizing your blog posts for search engines, you can set yourself up to sign more clients and grow your business, all through blogging.

Remember to stay consistent and authentic, and always prioritize the needs of your audience. Happy blogging!
