Starting a health coaching business is an exciting milestone!

You're passionate about helping people improve their health and well-being and eager to share your knowledge and expertise.

One of the biggest challenges new health coaches face is determining what to charge for their services. Many of my clients struggle with this, so if you do too, you’re not alone!

It’s common to feel hesitant to set prices that reflect your true value with the fear of pricing yourself too high or coming across as greedy.

But it's important to remember that underpricing yourself can actually do more harm than good.

When you undervalue your services, you not only diminish your own income potential but also devalue the entire health and wellness profession in the eyes of your clients.

So it goes without saying that determining your health coach price list properly is crucial for your success. Your pricing strategy will not only impact your income but also attract the right type of clients, define your brand, and position you in the market.

By setting competitive and profitable prices, you can build a sustainable nutrition business that allows you to thrive both personally and professionally.

As an experienced Registered Nutritionist myself, and a seasoned Business Coach for Nutritionists that has helped over 500+ practitioners start and grow their businesses, I understand firsthand the pricing challenges you face and I’m here to help you figure them out!

Understanding Your Value As A Health Coach

Before you can start to think about pricing, you need to understand the value you bring to your clients. This is arguably the most crucial step in Setting Your Health Coach Prices: What to Charge Clients.

Take a second to think about all the impacts you can have on a client’s journey as a health coach or nutritionist:

  • Improved physical health: You can help clients lose weight, increase energy levels, manage chronic conditions, and improve their overall physical well-being.

  • Enhanced mental and emotional well-being: You can support clients in reducing stress, improving sleep, and boosting their self-esteem.

  • Increased productivity and focus: By improving their energy levels and reducing stress, you can help clients become more productive and focused in their work and personal lives.

  • Improved relationships: Better health can lead to improved relationships with loved ones.

These are just a few examples of the valuable transformations you can help your clients achieve. It’s important to remember that these transformations are worth something to people and that they will pay you to help them achieve it.

Assessing the Value of Your Services

To accurately assess the value of your services, consider the following aspects of working with each client:

  • Your expertise and experience:

    • What unique qualifications do you possess? (e.g., certifications, advanced degrees, specialized training)

    • How many years of experience do you have in the field of nutrition and wellness?

    • What is your niche? (e.g., weight management, sports nutrition, digestive health)

  • The time and effort you invest:

    • Consider the time spent on client consultations, meal planning, creating personalized programs, and providing ongoing support.

    • Don’t forget to factor in the time spent working on your business such as marketing, administrative tasks, and continuing education.

  • The results your clients achieve:

    • What kind of results have your past clients achieved? (e.g., weight loss, improved blood sugar control, increased energy levels)

    • Gather testimonials from satisfied clients that showcase the positive impact of your coaching.

  • Your target market:

    • Who is your ideal client? What are their income levels and expectations?

    • Research what other health coaches in your area are charging for similar services.

Now that you’ve read through these, grab a pen and paper and go through them again, writing down your answers to help give you a good snapshot of your value as a practitioner.

Reflecting Your Expertise and Experience in Your Prices

Your pricing should reflect the expertise and experience you’ve jotted down from the exercise above.

If you have advanced certifications or extensive experience in a particular area, you can justify charging higher rates.

For example, a certified sports nutritionist with 10 years of experience working with professional athletes can command a higher fee than a general health coach with less experience.

This shows the importance of not only niching down into a specific specialty, but also following through with your business goals and sticking with it for years to come to increase your experience and, ultimately, your pricing.

If you’re new to the health coaching space, don’t worry! You will still be able to price your services at a profitable starting point and work your way up from there.

Leveraging Client Outcomes and Testimonials

As you begin helping clients transform their health, be sure to use client outcomes and testimonials to not only get new clients in the door, but to also justify your pricing (and future price increases).

Here are some ways you can leverage client outcomes and testimonials:

  • Measureable results: Share specific data about your client’s transformations, such as weight loss, improved blood sugar levels, or increased energy levels.

  • Client testimonials: Showcase positive feedback from satisfied clients. This social proof can help build trust and demonstrate the value you provide.

By understanding your unique value proposition and leveraging your expertise, experience, and client outcomes, you can confidently set prices that reflect the true worth of your services.

Creating Health Coach Prices That Feel Right

Now that you have a solid understanding of your value as a health coach, it's time to start setting your prices.

This can feel overwhelming, but by considering a few key factors, you can create a pricing structure that feels right for you and your business.

Here are some factors to consider when setting your health coach prices:

  • Business Overhead Costs

    • Consider all of your business expenses, such as software subscriptions, marketing costs, and professional development.

    • Factor these costs into your pricing to ensure profitability.

  • Lifestyle Goals

    • What income do you need to achieve your desired lifestyle?

    • Determine how many clients you need to see and how much you need to charge to meet your personal financial goals.

  • Your Target Audience

    • Research your ideal client's income level and expectations.

    • Consider offering different pricing tiers to cater to various budgets.

  • Your Competition

    • Research what other health coaches in your area are charging for similar services.

    • This will help you position yourself against your competition accordingly.

  • Service Offerings

    • Consider the level of service you provide. For example, do you offer one-on-one sessions, group coaching, meal plans, or other services?

    • Adjust your pricing accordingly based on the complexity and value of each service.

Balancing Affordability with Profitability

Finding the right balance between affordability and profitability is so important! Many practitioners fall into the trap of constantly discounting their offerings to try to get as many clients as possible.

But it’s important to make sure that your prices are competitive enough to attract clients, and also help you earn a sustainable income.

Here are some ways that you can balance affordability with profitability in your health coaching business:

  • Consider offering different pricing tiers

    • This could include a basic package, a premium package, and a VIP package.

    • This allows clients to choose the level of service that best fits their budget and needs.

  • Offer payment plans

    • This can make your services more accessible to clients who may not be able to afford the full cost upfront.

  • Consider value-based pricing

    • Instead of focusing solely on your time, consider the value you deliver to your clients in terms of your expertise, experience, and the transformation you can help them achieve.

    • How much are your clients willing to pay to achieve their health and wellness goals?

Insights into Industry Standards and Market Research

While there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to health coaching pricing, researching your competitors and colleagues can help gain valuable insights into industry standards and help you nail down your pricing even more.

Here are some ways to gain insights into industry standards and market research:

  • Network with other health coaches

    • Connect with other coaches in your area and have open and honest conversations about their pricing strategies.

    • Join online communities and forums for health coaches to gather information and exchange ideas.

  • Conduct online research

    • Search for information on typical health coaching fees in your area and for your specific niche.

    • Look for articles, blog posts, and industry reports that provide insights into current pricing trends.

By carefully considering these factors, you can create a pricing structure that is both competitive and profitable, allowing you to build a successful and sustainable health coaching business.

Common Coaching Package Pricing Strategies

When it comes to structuring your Health Coach Prices, offering coaching packages can be a highly effective strategy.

Coaching packages group together different services and provide clients with a clear understanding of what they're getting for their investment.

Here are some common coaching package pricing strategies:

  • Tiered Pricing: This is a popular approach where you offer different levels of service at varying price points. For example:

    • Basic Package: Includes a limited number of sessions, basic meal plans, and limited support.

    • Premium Package: Includes more sessions, personalized meal plans, recipe guides, and ongoing support.

    • VIP Package: Includes regular sessions for a longer period of time, in-depth personalized plans, and exclusive access to resources and community.

  • Bundle Packages: Combine different individual services at a discounted rate. For example, you could offer a bundle package that includes a combination of one-on-one coaching, group coaching, and a meal planning service.

  • Membership Packages: Offer ongoing support through a recurring membership fee. This can include weekly group coaching calls, access to a private online community, and regular recipe or meal plan uploads.

Pricing Strategies to Avoid

While I always recommend finding a pricing strategy that works best for you and your health coaching business, there are definitely some strategies that I suggest you shy away from. These include:

  • Over Discounting: Underpricing your services to compete with other coaches can devalue your expertise and make it difficult to sustain your business. Instead of focusing on the lowest price, focus on the unique value you bring to your clients.

  • One-size-fits-all pricing: Not all clients have the same needs or budgets. Avoid offering only one pricing option. Instead, offer a variety of packages to cater to different client needs and budgets.

By choosing a pricing strategy that not only works for your client but also for your bottom line, and avoiding some of the lesser beneficial pricing strategies, you can create profitable wellness coaching packages that attract your ideal clients and support your business growth.

Communicating Your Prices to Future Clients

Once you've determined your health coach fees, you’ll want to make sure that you communicate them effectively to your ideal clients.

Here are some tips for presenting your prices confidently:

  • Be upfront and transparent: Clearly state your pricing on your website, in your marketing materials, and during your initial consultation.

  • Provide clear explanations: Explain what is included in each package and how your services will benefit your clients.

  • Use visuals: Create a clear and concise price list that is easy for clients to understand. You can use a table or a simple infographic to visually display your pricing options.

  • Highlight the value: Focus on the value you provide to your clients instead of the price and explain how your services will help them achieve their health and wellness goals.

  • Address potential objections: Be prepared to answer questions and address any concerns clients may have about your pricing.

Handling Objections and Questions About Pricing

Price objections are by far the number one reason clients hesitate to work with practitioners. So it goes without saying that you'll often encounter questions and objections about your pricing.

Here are some tips for handling pricing questions and objections:

  • "That's too expensive."

    • Acknowledge their concern and reiterate the value you provide.

    • Explain that your services are an investment in their health and well-being.

    • You could also offer a payment plan or a more affordable package option.

  • "I can find cheaper options online."

    • Differentiate yourself by highlighting your unique expertise, experience, and the personalized support you provide.

    • Emphasize the quality of your services and the long-term benefits of working with you.

  • "Can you give me a discount?"

    • While it's okay to offer occasional discounts or promotions, avoid giving discounts to every client.

    • You can offer a discount for early bird registration or for sessions purchased in bulk.

When you communicate your fees clearly and address potential objections effectively, you can build trust with potential clients and attract those who are truly committed to their health and wellness.

How To Become Confident With Your Prices

One of the hardest things for new health coaches to overcome is the mindset challenges that come with setting, communicating, and being confident with your coaching package pricing.

Some mindset hurdles that can get in the way include:

  • Fear of rejection: Worrying that clients will find your prices too high and reject your services.

  • Imposter syndrome: Feeling like you're not qualified or have enough experience to charge the rates you deserve.

  • Guilt: Feeling guilty about charging for your time and expertise, especially if you're passionate about helping people.

These mindset hurdles can significantly impact your ability to set and communicate your prices confidently.

Overcoming Mindset Bumps

If you struggle with some of these mindset challenges, you’re not alone! It’s extremely common for new health coaches to struggle with setting prices confidently. Even seasoned professionals can have a hard time (trust me, I know from experience!).

To help you on the road to becoming confident with your prices, here are some strategies to overcome these mindset challenges:

  • Focus on the value you provide: Remind yourself of the profound impact you can have on your clients' lives and that you’re worth being paid for that value!

  • Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself and know that setting prices can be a challenging process.

  • Celebrate all your successes: Acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, both big and small. This can help you feel confident in the services you provide, the pricing you set, and in your nutrition business in general.

  • Seek support from colleagues: Connect with other health coaches and share your experiences and challenges. You’ll be surprised to find that they probably struggle with the same mindset blocks!
